Address - An Internet address is the name of a site you want to connect to, such as www.gastro.org. Also, an Internet address can be the address of someone you want to send e-mail to, such as gastroslides@gastro.org
Browser - The program you use to view web pages. Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator are web browsers, when new features are added to a browser a new version becomes available, it is important to look at your browser version for example, Microsoft Internet Explorer, 5.5
Compressed file - To make files smaller for downloading and copying to disks, computers can compress the file, making it smaller. Examples of compressed files are .zip, .sea, .hqx, .gz, and .tar. Two of the most popular utilities for creating and decompressing files are WinZip for Windows computers and StuffIt Expander for the MAC.
DNS (Domain Name system) server - A computer maintained by your Internet service provider that matches IP addresses to host names. Some providers will send you a specific DNS address. This address typically contains four sets of numbers separated by periods and is different from your IP address
Download - Moving software or files from one location to another for example moving a file from the internet to your desktop hard disc drive in your computer, moving a file from your desktop hard disc drive in your computer to an external disc drive such as floppy disc drive or zip disc drive
File Directory - The location of a particular file on your computer. Often looks like "C:\My Documents" on the PC or "MyHardDrive/My Documents on the MAC.
Floppy disc - Thin, plastic disc used to store information
Floppy drive - External storage device that is built into your computer or an external attachment to your computer by a cable connection
Hard disc drive - Storage disc on your computer
Home page - The main page of a Web site which usually contains a main navigation or table of contents containing hyperlinks to other pages within the site
Hyperlink - Anything on a web page that you can click to go to another page. A text or graphical hyperlink could go to another page at the same site or to page on a different part of the Internet.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) - A protocol that makes hypertext information available over the internet, when you use a computer that is connected to a server.
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) - Computer language used to create and design web pages; consists of a series of tags that create the page layout, format text, insert graphics and multimedia, etc
IP address - The numeric address of a computer, some internet providers send you the IP address of their server.
Internet service provider (ISP) - A company that provides access to the Internet through a subscription service.
ISDN - Integrated Services Digital Networking is available from most telephone companies and is used for high-speed communication with the Internet, commercial online services or corporate networks.
Password - A name the user chooses to log on to a restricted Web site or portion of a Web site
PDF file - Adobe Acrobat reader software that lets you view and print Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files, these files cannot be modified by the user.
PowerPoint - A Microsoft presentation graphics package that allows you to create fully formatted presentations and slides, there are different versions of this software as it is updated with new features, files will end in .ppt.
Stuff It file - A common format for compressed files on the Mac.
Surfing - The act of navigating the web by clicking hyperlinks.
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) - A suite of communication protocols that allow computers to talk to each other, thus creating the Internet.
url - Universal Resource Locator is the address of a web page, start with http:// and the url will appear in the address box of your browser. If you know the url of a particular page you want to go to, you can type it in the address box and then press "Enter."
Web page - Any document you can view on the web.
Web site - One or more web pages.
World Wide Web (www) - A hypertext system that lets you see documents in richly formatted text and graphics, using a browser allows you to navigate the web by clicking on hyperlinks.
Zip disc - Thick disc used to store higher capacity of information by compressing files.
Zip drive - External storage device that is built into your computer or an external attachment to your computer by a cable connection.
Zip file - A compressed file for Windows or Unix. Rarely used on the Mac.
